Choosing WordPress hosting
What to look for when choosing WordPress hosting: shared versus managed, and when to upgrade.
WordPress performance depends more on hosting and caching than on the theme. Here is how we think about it.
Shared hosting
Good for small sites with modest traffic. Look for SSD storage, a recent PHP version, built-in caching and a straightforward control panel. Expect to manage updates yourself. Hostinger is one provider that offers shared hosting (affiliate link below).
Managed WordPress hosting
Costs more, but handles caching, security updates, backups and staging for you. Worth it once downtime or slowness costs you real money. Kinsta is one provider of managed WordPress hosting (affiliate link below).
When to upgrade
- Pages take more than a couple of seconds on a fast connection even with caching
- You are regularly dealing with security or update problems
- You need staging environments and reliable backups
